Car testing center at the Arctic Circle
Me, you, us, the world, man itself continuously strives to become better, explore the unexplored, and innovate, improve, and innovate once more. But what good are innovations unless they work under all conditions?
Every piece of equipment, every new technology needs to be rigorously tested to make sure it not only works in a controlled test environment, but in real life situations as well. That’s where our car testing center comes into play. Winter testing is nowadays a regular milestone in the process of developing a vehicle and its components. And where better to test your new innovation than at our vehicle testing facilities located in the harsh environment of the Arctic north.
“Testing, testing, testing…”
Obviously, no one plans for failure. It just happens. Let’s take Elon Musk’s SpaceX starship rocket as an example. Four times it ended in a fiery explosion, but finally, on the fifth attempt, it successfully launched, and then landed.
It might be a bit of a “on the nose” example, but Elon’s vision is for his starship to first send people back to the Moon, before taking the first humans to Mars. How much testing do you think it will require before they can confidently say: “We’re ready to land on Mars”?
Well, at least six years according to what Elon Musk has previously stated. He says that it will be possible to land on Mars by 2026 already, but that the first crew should, and I quote: “be prepared to die”.
Even though a car is not rocket science (literally), they are very complex machines, and without proper testing, it can result in critical failure, putting lives at risk.
How the winter climate affects cars
Cars are similar to humans, they work best in a balanced climate. If they are in anything below 5°C or above 45°C, they won’t be able to deliver their peak performance. The optimal temperature range for a battery, and most humans, is between 15°C and 25°C.
Doesn’t matter if it’s an electric car or a conventional vehicle with a combustion engine, both will suffer from the effects of cold, harsh weather. And that’s why it’s necessary to perform rigorous testing in the controlled environment of car testing facilities. First off, to test the limits of the vehicle, identify flaws to be able to rectify them, but also to make sure that the testers won’t be put at any risk.
