OVERVIEW

Cold chamber
testing applications

Cold chambers allow for repeatable tests of both vehicles and separate components to be carried out in a controlled climatic environment. This, in order to evaluate the performance of different materials and systems when exposed to extreme cold temperature testing over a longer period of time.

Increased brittleness, frailty and stiffness of materials are a few of the effects that a cold chamber soak might induce. These effects can in turn affect many vehicle subsystems and the overall drivability characteristics in colder environments, making testing these factors essential before deployment on the market.

Temperature related effects on emissions from internal combustion engines, and the performance of electric vehicles in cold conditions are other important aspects that may be evaluated extensively with the help of cold chambers.

Our selection of cold chambers

Winter Car Testing | Icemakers

Icemakers offer a range of different cold chambers at our facilities. We have more than 20 cold chamber testing units suitable for all sizes of vehicles and components.

All cold chamber test units can be seamlessly operated down to -30 degrees Celsius, some even as low as -40 degrees. The temperature can be monitored remotely from the comfort of your office on your computer or smartphone.

Most of our cold chambers are built on fixed concrete foundations with double doors for insulation and durable roofs to handle heavy snow. We also offer mobile cold chamber containers, should these be required.

Our offering also includes a cold chamber for heavy vehicles. This unit can fit a normal sized bus, truck, or multiple cars. With two large cooling compressors, vehicles can be cooled to -30 degrees Celsius.

Icemakers have cold chambers conveniently located in close proximity to our test tracks, meaning that temperature related effects on the vehicles’ dynamic performance can be evaluated directly. Also, they are never far away from your workshop or office, ensuring convenient and efficient operation.

The flexibility of our cold chamber offering in terms of unit sizes and technical specifications means that we can offer something to fit the specific requirements of any customer.

    FAQ – Vehicle Cold Chambers

The cold chamber test units offered by Icemakers can be seamlessly operated down to -30°C, with some units capable of reaching temperatures as low as -40°C.

A cold chamber soak can induce increased brittleness, frailty, and stiffness in materials. These effects can have implications for various vehicle subsystems and overall drivability characteristics in cold environments. Testing these factors before market deployment is essential to ensure optimal performance.

Yes, Icemakers provides a cold chamber unit specifically designed for heavy vehicles. This unit can accommodate a normal-sized bus, truck, or multiple cars. It is equipped with two large compressors in order to cool vehicles down to -30°C.

Cold chambers can be used to assess the performance of electric vehicles in cold conditions. This includes evaluating the efficiency of battery systems, range capabilities, charging performance, and overall vehicle dynamics in extreme cold temperatures.
