OVERVIEW

About Our Land Test Tracks

Our land test tracks are used by global OEMs, component suppliers, and research teams pushing the limits of everything from electric sedans to heavy-duty trucks. Whether you’re developing traction control systems, ABS, or full vehicle platforms, our land-based facilities provide the rugged, repeatable environment you need.

The layouts of our land testing tracks are designed to take full advantage of what the land offers: slopes, inclines, and uneven surfaces that lake ice can’t replicate. Engineers can simulate whatever real-world scenarios they need – sudden traction loss, mixed-surface braking, hill starts.

EXTENDED TEST SEASON

Extending the Test Season with Land Test Tracks

Land test tracks provide a vital advantage in the early winter phase, before the lakes reach safe ice thickness. Testing can start as early as November, giving engineering teams a longer operational window to validate systems, collect comparison data, and adjust setups before shifting onto lake surfaces later in the season. This expanded timeline helps stabilize development schedules and reduces the bottlenecks that usually appear when everyone waits for the ice to form.

Our primary land testing track site is located at Pipudden, 8 kilometers east of Arjeplog at the foot of Galtispouda mountain, offering varied terrain and dependable winter conditions. Additional dedicated land test tracks are also maintained for select customers in other parts of Arjeplog as well as in Arvidsjaur, ensuring flexible access and room for tailored testing programs across the region.

COMMON QUESTIONS

FAQ – Land Test Tracks

A land test track is a dedicated winter-testing facility on solid ground, designed for cold-climate vehicle testing. Our land tracks are located at Pipudden (east of Arjeplog) and other sites in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur. They allow you to begin testing earlier in the season (often from late November) because you’re not waiting for lake ice to form. They take advantage of natural terrain features: slopes, inclines, uneven surfaces and various surfaces that the lake cannot replicate.

On our land test tracks you can conduct:

  • Vehicle dynamics and handling tests (curves, fast and slow speed sections, slalom)
  • Traction and drivetrain tests (including mixed-µ surfaces, hill starts, incline behaviour)
  • ESC/calibration and powertrain development tests under winter conditions
  • Mixed-surface braking, split-µ tests (where one side has different friction than the other), and other real-world winter scenarios

Our land tracks combine several winter-specific surface types, for example:

  • Packed snow surfaces and groomed snow lanes.
  • Polished ice sections and graded ice surfaces to create low-µ (low traction) conditions.
  • Heated asphalt with split-µ sections, where one side might be ice and the other asphalt – allowing immediate µ-jumps (traction difference).
  • Natural terrain features: inclines/hills, uneven surfaces, mixed surfaces, slopes.
