We live our lives and conduct our business in one of Europe’s last true wildernesses.

Swedish Lapland is a vast, beautiful region with tall mountains reaching up to the sky, endless forests, and wide river valleys, all full of wildlife.

Lapland is also the home of the Sami, the indigenous people of the region, whose culture and lifestyle are deeply rooted in the area, providing a rich cultural heritage.

This is an awe-inspiring place that commands respect and thoughtfulness from the people inhabiting its lands. For us at Icemakers, it is important to conduct our business here in a sustainable fashion, making the most out of the unique conditions we are operating in while at the same time doing what we can to limit the negative impacts on the natural and cultural landscape around us.

A Chilling Responsibility

Climate Change in Swedish Lapland

Temperatures in the Arctic and subarctic regions are rising faster than the global average, which has several serious consequences:

Firstly, the glaciers in the mountain areas are melting at an alarming rate, leading to changes in water flows and ecosystems. The reduced ice mass also contributes to rising sea levels globally, which is an example of how local changes have global effects.
Secondly, climate change affects the traditional Sami way of life. Reindeer herding depends on predictable climate patterns and access to grazing lands. Warmer winters can lead to ice formation on the ground, making it difficult for the reindeer to find food. Additionally, increased vegetation and altered snow patterns can disrupt the traditional migration routes of the reindeer herds.
Furthermore, the region’s biodiversity is impacted. Many species adapted to cold climates may struggle to survive as temperatures rise. For example, the Arctic fox is threatened by competition from the red fox, which spreads northward as the climate becomes milder.

Our Environmental Policy

Our business and the decisions we make both in our daily operations and at a strategic level shall be guided by an awareness and an active commitment to promoting environmentally beneficial and long-term sustainable practices.

To achieve this, we shall:

Limit emissions into the air by continuously renewing our vehicle fleet and ensuring that it is used in the most efficient manner possible.
Limit our climate impact by conserving resources and, whenever possible, choosing the most environmentally friendly and local options in the selection of materials, products and services.
Have an interested and engaged staff, where clear routines and processes form the basis for active and preventive environmental work.
Conduct recurring sustainability activities for the staff with the purpose of building knowledge and engagement.
Ensure efficiency and continuous improvements both from an environmental and quality perspective through the use of a structured operational system.
Incorporate a sustainability mindset in everything we do, such as efficient waste management and procurement.
Actively work to limit environmental impact on land, air, and water, and ensure compliance with both environmental legislation requirements and other standards.
